VVS vs VS Clarity: The Complete Guide to Buying the Right Grade

VVS1. VVS2. VS1. VS2. These grades sound technical, but the practical question is simple: which one is actually visible to the naked eye? The answer determines whether you're spending money on real quality or on documentation nobody will ever look at.

How the Clarity Scale Works

Clarity grades measure the presence and visibility of inclusions and blemishes in a diamond. The most important fact about this scale: all grades from Flawless through VS2 are eye-clean. You cannot see the inclusions with the naked eye. The difference between a VVS1 and a VS2 stone in normal wearing conditions is zero.

VVS — Very Very Slightly Included

VVS inclusions are so small they are extremely difficult to find even under 10× magnification. In any real-world condition — daylight, indoor lighting, on a person's finger — a VVS diamond looks completely clean. At StudsDirect, we sell exclusively VVS1 because our direct sourcing from SEEPZ allows us to specify it at the crystal stage.

VS — Very Slightly Included

VS inclusions are minor but somewhat easier to locate under 10× magnification than VVS. Both VS1 and VS2 are universally eye-clean in any realistic viewing condition. The savings over VVS can be redirected to cut grade or carat weight.

The Price Difference at Lab-Grown Prices

Grade Naked Eye 10× Loupe Price vs VS1
VVS1 Invisible Extremely difficult +15–25%
VVS2 Invisible Very difficult +10–18%
VS1 Invisible Difficult Baseline
VS2 Invisible Somewhat easy −5–10%

Cut Grade Outranks Clarity Every Time

If you're choosing between upgrading from VS1 to VVS2, or upgrading from Very Good cut to Excellent cut — choose the cut. Every time. The cut is what people see. The clarity grade is what the certificate says.

The Practical Recommendation

For most buyers: VVS2 or VS1 is the rational choice. Both are eye-clean. VS1 saves money that can go to a better cut or more carat weight. VVS2 buys documented top-tier clarity at a modest premium.
